An interview with Nguyen Hai Nam, April 2010.

What is your main source of inspiration?

I love nature, especially the color of the different flowers in which I like to paint the lotus flowers the most. The lotus flower has many meanings. It is viewed as a representation of spirituality according to the eastern culture, as a symbol of aspirations to rise towards the light, as the roots of the lotus flower has its roots in the mud but it grows in the upward direction.

Why are you an artist, and how long have you been creating art?

I graduated from the Ha Noi University of Industrial Fine Arts, (The Faculty of Industrial Design) in 2009. I love the color of nature, the flowers and leaves, the grass and trees. That helped me to become an artist and I work with full of passion.

How did you start painting?

I started painting when I was at the high school. At that time, I was 18 years old.

Why did you choose your medium?

I use oil because with this medium I can express the different colors in the paintings quickly and not only tell my technique but can show the depth of my paintings. It also brings a warm feeling to the viewers.

What other mediums have you used, or would like to pursue?

I used to do water color on silk and acrylic but I think I will paint oil on canvas for my future works.

What style do you consider your work to fall under?

I like Impressionism. Especially, the great art works of Van Gogh.

Where has your art been displayed?

My works have been collected by the art lovers from Holland, France and Australia. I’ve not had a gallery sponsor until now.

Where have you traveled with your art?

I like traveling and have been around many parts of Vietnam. I would like to travel to other countries to capture the beauty of their places.

What would you like to accomplish with your art, or where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I wish that people will love my works more and more and would like to create a different beauty of nature in every painting of mine.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

What I enjoy most about being an artist, is that I can take my inspiration from the suggestions of nature and what is happening around me.

What makes a successful painting?

A nice idea expressed successfully on canvas with well-combined colors in rich composition.
